Get Your Permit as Early as your 15th Birthday!

How to Get Your Permit

You have two options to get your instructional permit:

  • Enroll in our driver's ed program when you turn 15 and Driving 101 can issue you a permit waiver in lieu of taking the written test. Take the permit waiver to the Department of Licensing up to 10 days prior to the first day of class.
  • You may take the written test at the Department of Licensing to attain your instructional permit once you're 15 1/2.

Please bring the following with you to the Department of Licensing:

  1. Your parent or guardian
  2. Birth certificate
  3. Social security card
  4. $20.00

The DOL will print your permit.
(If you have questions about alternative identification, call the DOL direct at 360.260.6122)

Please note:
You will need your permit by the second week of drivers ed.
If you are under 18 years old, you must hold your permit for a minimum of 6 months prior to applying for your driver's license and have practiced 50 hours.
