1. Pre-Application To Be A WA Driver Through the DOL Website

2A. How to Get A Permit Waiver (Waives The Written KNOWLEDGE EXAM FOR PERMIT PROCESS)

Intermediate License Example
You can obtain a WA Instructional Permit without taking the DOL Knowledge Exam with a Permit waiver up to 10 Days Before Class Starts.

Step 1.  Sign up for driver's ed (You can sign up as early as your 15th birthday)

Step 2.  Complete the Pre-Application with the DOL. It will generate a Driver License Number for you.

Step 3-  Call 360.892.6988, with the generated Driver License Number from the DOL Pre-application. 

Step 4-  We go into the DOL database, enter your new Driver License Number and click the "Permit Waiver" box

Step 5-  You go to the DOL to get a permit.  

What you will want to take to the DOL to get your Instructional Permit:
  • Photo ID
  • Social Security Card
  •  A parent
  • $25

HOw to get your permit online!

The Department of Licensing (DOL) now has the ability to offer a new online service for Non-Photo Instruction Permits.
This new service builds upon the existing online pre-application process we currently use to provide to new drivers.
For individuals who have completed the pre-application process and have a permit (knowledge test) waiver or passing
knowledge test score entered in License eXpress, they may immediately receive a temporary non-photo instruction permit.

2B. How To Get A WA Driving Permit With A KNOWLEDGE EXAM 

1. Visit Driving 101 and take the DOL Knowledge Exam (You must be at least 15 1/2 years old)

2. Then go to the DOL to get your Instructional Permit

What To Take To The DOL When You Get A WA INSTRUCTIONAL Permit

- Bring State ID
    or
- Certified Birth Certificate
    or
- Passport
    and
-Social Security Card

In addition to proving identity you will also need to bring:
-Parent or guardian (if you are under 18)
-$25 Instructional Permit Fee

Note- If you are under 18, you must hold your permit for a minimum of 6 months before you can apply for your WA State Driving License.
